RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY
Radical prostatectomy is a cancer treatment in which the prostate gland and seminal vesicles are removed. Lymph-node assessment may be performed in selected patients. The approach may be open, laparoscopic or robotic depending on availability and clinical factors.
Common Symptoms
Early prostate cancer often has no symptoms. Possible urinary or sexual symptoms can occur with prostate disease but are not specific for cancer.
Causes of RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY
Prostate cancer develops from abnormal growth of prostate cells. Risk is influenced by age, family history and genetic factors.
Risk Factors
Increasing age; family history; inherited genetic risk; certain population and lifestyle factors.
Diagnosis
PSA testing; digital rectal examination when appropriate; MRI; prostate biopsy; staging investigations as indicated.
Treatment Options
Active surveillance; surgery; radiation; hormone therapy or other treatments depending on cancer risk and stage.
Benefits of Treatment
Potentially curative treatment for selected localized prostate cancer; removal allows pathological staging.
Recovery & Aftercare
Recovery involves catheter care and gradual return to activity. Urinary continence and erectile function can take time to recover and vary between patients.
Prevention
Regular cancer surveillance; healthy lifestyle; follow-up PSA testing as advised.
Possible Complications
Urinary leakage; erectile dysfunction; bleeding; infection; lymphatic complications in selected cases.
