CIRCUMCISION

Circumcision removes the foreskin covering the head of the penis. In adults it may be considered for conditions such as recurrent balanitis, significant phimosis or selected other medical indications.

Common Symptoms

Tight foreskin; difficulty retracting the foreskin; recurrent inflammation; painful erections; difficulty maintaining hygiene.

Causes of CIRCUMCISION

Phimosis may be related to scarring, inflammation, infection or other skin conditions.

Risk Factors

Recurrent balanitis; diabetes; scarring skin conditions; poor foreskin hygiene; previous inflammation.

Diagnosis

Clinical examination; assessment of foreskin and glans; blood glucose testing when indicated.

Treatment Options

Topical treatment in selected cases; treatment of infection; circumcision when clinically indicated.

Benefits of Treatment

Can relieve problematic foreskin tightness; may reduce recurrence of some foreskin-related conditions.

Recovery & Aftercare

Healing usually takes several weeks. Patients should follow wound-care and activity restrictions provided by the surgeon.

Prevention

Good genital hygiene; control diabetes when present; prompt treatment of inflammation or infection.

Possible Complications

Bleeding; infection; pain; swelling; wound-healing problems; cosmetic or functional concerns.

When Should You Consult a Doctor?
